aha! an actual update

So I know I've been pretty lax in doing actual content in my LJ in lieu of videos and links and things of the like, but a lot of it is because I just don't feel motivated to type up anything of significant length. However, a lot's been going on with me life-wise, so I figured I had a good reason to update.

* managed to get a pell grant and a Washington State grant, which will cover the cost of my classes. I think I talked about that before. 2,200 dollars per quarter, more than enough to cover everything I need. Going to use what's left over and save it to cover the cost of books, and get some new clothes, etc. Do useful things with it since I'm now a starving college student.

* starting school in just under a week now. Schedule is English 102 Mon-Fri, Intro to Integrated Multimedia Tues/Thurs and Scriptwriting I Tues/Thurs.

* Parents were nice enough to purchase me a laptop as a present for going back to school. It's an HP Pavilion dv6433cl. Intel Centrino Duo 1.73ghz, 2gb of memory, 160gb HD, Windows Vista (I tried installing XP, but it was giving me all sorts of issues, so I'm back to Vista, which runs pretty well, and this will do what I need it to do, anyways).

* Looking forward to learning a whole bunch of new things at school. Trying to plan out the rest of my schedule for the following quarters, and I have a few directions I'm looking at going in. Olympic College offers a transfer degree for their Integrated Multimedia program for Evergreen State, but I'm debating if I'll do that, or look at just getting an associate's degree for now. Still have time to decide.

* Not really much else to say. Saw a couple of movies finally over the summer - Shoot 'Em Up which I really enjoyed (it was exactly what I expected it would be, with some small surprises and some well put-together action sequences) and Superbad, which I don't think was as good as people seem to think, but it might be because it was a little too over-the-top in the 'top this crap' mode of stuff happening to the characters all the time. That and I don't think I'm in the age range for that movie (which is probably around 18-25 or so).

* That's about it. Just looking forward to school, really.

YaaaaaaaY! I'm glad things are working out for you! School is always a good option. That was nice of your parents to get you a laptop.

[identity profile] etherpunk.livejournal.com 2007-09-18 04:55 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah it was. How you been, lady?

I might be in town in the next week after my first week of school. Haven't quite decided yet.

I'm happy to hear good things! And lots of money, so Save, save, save!

Damn, I want to see Shoot 'Em Up badly. Clive Owen has done a few movies lately that I didn't enjoy so I'm concerned about SEU. About Superbad: the odd thing about Apatow's movies is that they have heart underneath all that insanity and gross humor.

[identity profile] etherpunk.livejournal.com 2007-09-18 05:11 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, I did see some of that in Superbad.

The thing to do before you go see Shoot 'Em Up is watch his sequence in Sin City. Similar mindset. Also, Children of Men is another good one because he's got the same sort of gruff persona in that movie.

Yeah, I definitely want to save up money so I can get a place near the campus. Save on having to take the bus everyday (granted it's a 25 minute bus ride, but still).

[identity profile] bohemu.livejournal.com 2007-09-20 02:20 am (UTC)(link)
I saw a few clips of SEU on YouTube, I see what you mean. Now I'm even more excited, since Sin city was the first movie I saw of his that I really enjoyed.

My bus ride is 45 minutes to an hour. Lucky you! The bus price doesn't go up the further the ride, right?

[identity profile] etherpunk.livejournal.com 2007-09-20 02:22 am (UTC)(link)
Nope. The price is the same all the way around. In Seattle it's like that. $1.50 for one zone, $2.00 for 2 zones.

Yeah, Shoot 'Em Up was a fun movie. Total mind candy, really.

I still say thats really nice of your parents to buy you a laptop like that. lol God knows you'll be a slave to it in your classes. X) But seriously, I think you'll be an ace scriptwriter (if it still fancies you later on).

And Superbad sucks, don't endorse it. >\

[identity profile] etherpunk.livejournal.com 2007-09-18 05:42 am (UTC)(link)
Superbad didn't suck. There were some moments I enjoyed, but overall it's not the kind of film I could recommend to others because I didn't see anything in it worth recommending.

[identity profile] ex-fluff.livejournal.com 2007-09-18 05:45 am (UTC)(link)
Yea. Sadly... I am the same way with Superman Returns.

[identity profile] etherpunk.livejournal.com 2007-09-18 05:47 am (UTC)(link)
Man.. that movie had such potential, but instead we got Superman III part 2.

[identity profile] ex-fluff.livejournal.com 2007-09-18 05:54 am (UTC)(link)
I know? I mean... we could have done without the illegitimate kid. And the time skip. AND the completely unnecessary destruction scenes.

What was so BAD about re-making the first Superman? It was this big, long story about showing what a negligent, illegitimate father our favourite hero is.

[identity profile] etherpunk.livejournal.com 2007-09-18 05:56 am (UTC)(link)
It just seemed like a fanboy film more than it did something that could stand on its own. That's the real problem I had with it. I mean, I love Bryan Singer for his other work, but trying to homage Richard Donner in such a dull and boring way really doesn't do anything for me.

[identity profile] ex-fluff.livejournal.com 2007-09-18 06:25 am (UTC)(link)
I agree on that, and I say it because I adore Bryan Singer as a director. And honestly, I was upset that I was so hyped up for this movie and it was so poorly executed by the same man.

Ahaha, then again, comic book movies these days are awful as sin. Well, save Sin City, of course.

[identity profile] etherpunk.livejournal.com 2007-09-18 06:29 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, I loved Sin City. Batman Begins and Hellboy were also pretty good, in that they delivered in the way I expected. For the most part though, comics don't get the proper respect when the material's being brought to the screen. Sin City is a good example of how to use the comic as a storyboard. There's two more comic movies coming out soon that I'm actually excited about though - 30 Days of Night and Iron Man. That and The Dark Knight should make for an interesting next few months, and then Queen and Country (which I mentioned before to you on IM) is coming out.

Huzzah! Good to hear, man. :)

[identity profile] etherpunk.livejournal.com 2007-09-18 05:53 am (UTC)(link)
Thanks man!

Whoohoo!!!! *huggles*
