Remove all your facebook applications and opt out of the facebook API (Under privacy settings). Tada, no facebook application spam.

I'm wishing there was a way to avoid the spam and continue using the applications I enjoy.

You've been good at that, yes. But then most people on my friends list understand. There's just a couple that seem to throw me an invite for every single application they add.
